Each of us has our own writing habits . Searching online is full of articles that suggest habits to adopt when writing: but how can you suggest to someone what habits to have? Writing habits are the most personal thing there is. We must not copy or imitate those of others to write, but cultivate our own . What are writing habits? Habit is a habit , it is a continuous repetition of the same action - in our case writing. But the habit is acquired with experience, it does not arise by itself. The habit of writing is a ritual : it needs formulas (they are the language and style of the writer), gestures and movements (they are the same action of fingers on the keyboard or notes taken on paper), attitudes (they are the concentration, reasoning, self-discipline).
Why are writing habits important? I say it in the subtitle of the article: because they allow us to write better , with all the meanings we want to give to the term "better". For me, "better" has above all meant achieving results . Since I have cultivated my writing habits I have managed to get to a good point in the long science fiction novel and finish Special Data writing the political essay, now in revision. It meant acquiring a writing method , which is made up not only of writing sessions , but also of continuous documentation, word searches, in-depth studies and study to more adequately develop a scene, a chapter, a concept. We knew we had finally found our writing habits when we started seeing the first results.
Create your own writing habits Since a habit is like a ritual, each of us must seek our own, not follow those of others: I read about an author who gets up at 4 in the morning (or at night, depending on your point of view) to write. There are those who write from 8 in the morning until 1pm and then resume at 2pm until 5pm. Some people love to write in clubs or even on the train. There is writing for 8 consecutive hours or more. I'd like the second habit – and that's actually more or less what I do – but for now I can't dedicate all that time to fiction. To create your own writing habits you need 4 "ingredients": space, time, consistency and a goal. Find your own space to write The writing environment is important.
